Removal

Shop around to find a competitive removal firm - many will not take a booking until you have actually exchanged contracts in case the sale falls through.

Building insurance

Arrange building insurance on your new home - you will have to do this before you actually move in.

 

Contents insurance

On the day you move, make sure your insurance company knows to transfer your existing contents insurance to your new address.

Motor insurance

Change your motor insurance so that your car is registered at your new address.

Utilities

Contact the gas and electricity suppliers to obtain final readings for your old address. Arrange with the gas and electricity suppliers for connection at your new property.

Telephone

Arrange for your telephone to be connected at your new home, and your number transferred if appropriate.

Mail

Redirect your mail using a special form available from the Post Office. You can specify how many months you want the redirection facility to last.

Keys

Label the spare keys for the new owner of your house and leave a set with the estate agent.

The kettle

Don't forget to ensure a kettle, washing up gloves, washing up liquid, teabags, a couple of mugs and a bottle of champagne are easily accessible for when you arrive at your new home.
